Akira Kobayashi and his style of work
A type designer who has shown immense creativity in the field of type design is Akira Kobayashi. He has worked as a type director for over thirty years, which has cemented his exemplary status as a designer. Before doing so, he studied at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo. He obtained many jobs and multiple partnerships with other companies. He has designed almost fifty différent fonts ranging from Akko Pro to DIN Next. He has worked for such companies as Sony, UBS and Panasonic.
One typeface that he has used was called Between. The type offers an affable and relatable design that offers a typeface that is human-related and approachable. The design comes into three différent versions or variants of itself. The design is a perfect example of how to gain variety in a type design and get the most out of said design.
Its main strengths come from its variety and the ability for the audience to choose for themselves which choice is the best in the variety pack type design, so to speak. It makes for wonderful viewing to have a myriad of options while looking at a design that may, traditionally, only have one type of design on it. It’s clever and unorthodox that makes it something unique to look at with a naked eye.
Some of the weaknesses of the type may come from its bizarre techniques. Most times, type design will focus on one design and only one design. It seems strange that seeing three different types would be somewhat jarring and, to some people, may find it overcrowded and confusing without a sense of focus in its theme or design.
The effectiveness of the application does have a memorable effect on the spectator that it will certainly leave a good or unique impression with its style. Its style has become slightly more mainstream as designers, artists and creators have created designs with more variety as more people decide to stray away from traditionalism in art and design. This would include typography and other forms of calligraphy.
While traditions have taught artists the basics in creating, it may come across dull and bland when consistently using it. It is almost fun to see a variety of différent works that look like they are from a différent author, but in actuality, they are created and designed by the same person. One day, this style of design may prove to be a household work and ubiquitous in its own right.
