How to Bounce Back after getting fired?
Nobody likes getting fired and nobody likes making that walk of shame down the exit. Believe men when I say that I’ve been there. When you get fired, it can be the most devastating and demotivating thing on the face of the Earth.
In reality, it’s only a minor setback that should not be dwelled upon by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn’t matter what the reason was and it doesn’t matter how well you performed on the job. If you know for a fact that you are talented enough for the industry that you are in, don’t let anyone or anything deter you.
I say all of this to motivate you for a better life that I only wish I could tell my college self.
Know Your Worth
First and foremost, if you are looking for another job, it’s best that you evaluate what went wrong and learn from the mistake. More important than that is to know your worth. If you had to deal with disrespectful coworkers and a trifling boss, make sure that you put your foot down and not tolerate that disrespect again.
Make sure that you have a firmer and tougher hide the next job you get, which I’m sure that you will. Don’t be afraid to ask for more money or at the very least negotiate. If a company offers you a deal for very little money, do not attempt to look at it if you know that the offer is beneath you.
If you want to do more than bounce back from a job, it’s imperative that you do this to get ahead. It shows that you are not a pushover and you are smart enough to know that you are a hard-worker and you will demand more money or resources, as such.
This section goes without saying. Applying for work on Linkedin, Indeed, Monster and any other third-party is your best bet. You must also set a goal for yourself. Tell yourself that you will apply for at least ten jobs a day and make sure that you don’t do anything to break that goal. Make it your mission to do this everyday.
As long as you keep applying for work, eventually, something will stick and if you polish your resume enough, you will get something. Heck, you might get more than what you expected, but you have to keep going at it every day.
Call Instead of Email
One of the best ways to get noticed by future employers is to call people directly rather than emailing them. Emails can easily get lost in spam or junk mail, making them more easily disposable, but a call is something that seems more personal. Unless the person that you are calling has a voicemail that is full, chances are that they will try to contact you if they are interested.
Of course that doesn’t mean that you should be calling them 24/7. Call and show interest, but, at the same time, do not pester them. It’s also important that you be cold-calling other companies to see if they are looking for the services that you are able to provide for them. Try to only call these people around once a month. Once you keep it at that stream of communication, the employer won’t think it will become inappropriate.
Brag, Brag, Brag
A lot of people will tell you to be humble, but, if you understand your worth and know how hard-working and how good you are at your job, I encourage you to brag of your achievements far and wide. Gordon Gecko says that greed is good and I say that arrogance is good.
When you are able to back up what you say with actual facts, you become indispensable at work and then you have the ability to have employers grovel on their knees to work with you. That’s the beauty of working hard, learning on the job and bragging about your skills and previous jobs.
